It seems that the text of the Outcome Document is close to being finalised – with just the thorny issue of ‘foreign occupation’ holding things up.
The agreed language on MDG5b seems to be as follows:
Para 63 r. Welcoming the Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health, undertaken by a broad coalition of partners, in support of national plans and strategies, in order to significantly reduce the number of maternal, newborn and under five child deaths as a matter of immediate concern, by scaling up a priority package of high impact interventions, and integrating efforts in sectors like health, education, gender equality, water and sanitation, poverty reduction, and nutrition. It’s not particularly progressive language – not that we were expecting it – but at least it is in, unlike lots of other key development issues. Grateful for small mercies?
